Wildfire Response

We are devastated by the fires that have impacted so many lives, homes, businesses, and institutions in our beloved Los Angeles communities.
Armed with our mission to end the epidemic of homelessness in LA—and the team and infrastructure we’ve built to carry out that mission—we have worked with key partners to rapidly help those suddenly left homeless, jobless, or both. We are particularly concerned about individuals and families who were already vulnerable prior to the disaster, and we want to ensure that they are properly supported in the recovery process.
Here are the initiatives we have put into place to help our community recover stronger in the weeks and months ahead:

“Thank you so very much for the support and help. My son and I are incredibly grateful. I can’t thank you enough. God bless you for blessing us.”
Deysi Rivas, EAF grant recipient

Emergency Assistance Fund

Six days after the fires began, Better Angels launched an Emergency Assistance Fund (EAF) to support economically vulnerable families impacted by the fires. For these low-income families, the fires have created a uniquely precarious situation, one which has the potential to plunge many of them into homelessness.

Leveraging the infrastructure of our existing homelessness prevention pillar, the STEP Fund, we operationalized a program providing emergency grants directly to low-income individuals and families who lost their homes in the fires. The money provides immediate relief around critical items such as food, clothing, transportation and medicine. Applications are reviewed daily, then verified by the Better Angels team, and following an underwriting process, awards are directly deposited into individuals' accounts daily.

The vast majority of low-income applicants were directly impacted by the Eaton fire. Grantees include:

  • A 79-year-old blind woman from Altadena who was living with her grandson when her home burned to the ground, and she was not able to take anything, including her documents.
  • A family of 7 in Altadena (including two adult children, their parents and their minor children) who have been forced to stay in Azuza and were unable to get their children to school in Pasadena. The grant was used for clothing for the children and transportation to get them to and from school.
  • A family of 6 (including two adults and 4 minor children) who lost everything in the fire and have no family in California. They did not know where else to turn.

To date, more than 300 grant applications have been processed, and over $60K in aid has been distributed to over 100 families. Thanks to additional funding for the program from LA Tech Cares, we will enable even more families to get the help they desperately need.

Resource Days

Resource Days are a staple of the Better Angels slate of services we provide to people experiencing homelessness. We host dozens of Resource Days around LA County each quarter, where anyone who is unhoused and in crisis can receive food, water, hygiene supplies, and other essentials.

The Better Angels Services Team hosted a Resource Day in Encino while under an evacuation warning, co-hosted an event at Whittier Narrows a few days after it was evacuated for local fires, and partnered with LA Mission to host a services event near Altadena.

We will be hosting many more of these events in the coming weeks and months at locations throughout LA County, including some of the area’s most impacted by the wildfires.
