Launched in 2020 by the LA County Homeless Initiative, Project Homekey is a partnership between Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles, other cities, and the State of California to purchase and rehabilitate hotels and motels for conversion into permanent, long-term housing for people experiencing homelessness.
PHK builds upon Project Roomkey, which was an emergency initiative to lease hotel rooms to seniors and other medically vulnerable people experiencing homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of October 2023, there are 79 total PHK sites with a total of 4,338 units in Los Angeles County: 37 supportive housing sites with 2,300 units, and 42 interim housing sites with 2,038 units.
